In parallel with its vocational education program, the Florida Photonics Cluster (FPC) also partners with a network of employers, other clusters, professional societies, resource agencies and search firms to help identify and place skilled photonics expertise where it is needed.  

Members have access to a dynamic pool of qualified candidates, both recent graduates from institutions with concentrated programs in photonics and associated technologies at all levels as well as seasoned professionals seeking a change. They can also post vacancies which will appear on this site as well in our directories.

Job seekers can also look to the FPC as a resource in helping facilitate a move to the next stage in their career or as a means of entering the field of photonics from another field or industry.

Photon-X

Engineering and Operations Manager

Photon-X has an immediate opening for a dynamic engineering expert in new product design and manufacturing to join their team in Kissimmee Florida. This individual will need to manage a multidisciplinary team of optical, electrical, mechanical and software engineers plus the technicians in a new product development. The engineering and operations manager will also oversee prototype and pilot production of new products as well as a global network of contract manufacturers that produce intermediate assemblies and finished goods. This position requires excellent communications skills as it requires direct interaction with customers, suppliers, global research partners, executives, and engineers at all levels. This position requires above average business acumen, design engineering best practices and manufacturing best practices knowledge.

Photon-X is an imaging systems integrator and member of BRIDG that delivers custom imaging solutions into a variety of high-tech markets. The ideal candidate for the engineering and operations manager will have a master’s degree in electrical, mechanical or optical engineering with no less than 5 years’ experience in design engineering and no, less than 5 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment.

Engineering and Operations Manager Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in (optical, mechanical or electrical) Engineering.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in product development or product R&D.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in manufacturing.
  • Strategic thinking within a framework of overall business health and long-term department level and business level success.
  • Outstanding technical troubleshooting and analysis skills across multiple engineering disciplines.
  • Outstanding communications skills.
  • Experience recruiting, hiring, training and mentoring a multidisciplinary technical staff.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary technical teams.
  • A high level of organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage 10-20 direct reports including establishing departmental and individual goals.
  • Departmental budget experience and project budget planning experience.

Preferred Skills

  • Phase Gate product development expertise.
  • Design for manufacturing and assembly expertise.
  • Design for Six Sigma expertise.
  • LEAN 6-Sigma Expertise.
  • Knowledge of electronics manufacturing processes.
  • Knowledge of 3D printing and CNC machining processes, their limitations, and cost drivers.

LaserStar Technologies

Laser/Optical Engineer

The Laser/Optical Engineer will design and develop new laser systems, optical paths and assemblies. The individual will work with and support Customers, Sales, Application Engineering, Engineering and Manufacturing departments.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Develop, Design, Prototype and Test various types of optical systems and laser systems
    (i.e. flash lamp, diode pumped, direct diode, and fiber)
  • Understand and support the application of the company’s laser systems
  • Analyze laser systems, optical systems and components to improve performance and reliability
  • Select and qualify laser and optical components and suppliers and provide supplier support
  • Write technical reports and technical specifications
  • Participate with other engineering team members on the develop of products to ensure efficient production methods, manufacturability, serviceability, reliability and uniformity across product lines

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong hands on experience in optical and laser design
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Experience with mechanical and optical layout tools required
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Be a team player able to work with and support other departments and interact positively with customer and suppliers

To perform this job successfully, the candidate should have education and/or industrial experience in the design, development and manufacturing of laser systems and optics.

BS in Physics, Optics or Laser Engineering.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Valid Drivers License and clean MVR record & BCI record is required.

Responsibilities:

Reporting directly to the Senior Vice-President, Life Sciences and Instrumentation, this key contributor will work with our potential and existing clients, through direct and indirect channels, to meet their precision light measurement needs with Gooch and Housego’s industry leading solutions and expertise.

As the customer’s point of contact and voice, the candidate must be able to provide applications assistance, product support and sales of Gooch and Housego’s products and services to technical buyers. This includes responding to tenders, RFPs, RFQs, generating contracts, bid proposals and supporting the negotiation and closing sales with our distributors and representatives. The Product Manager is expected to follow up on quotations, drive processing of orders and maintain adequate records to document price quotations, decisions, progress and results of activity. The product manager will also be responsible for defining new products based on market knowledge, creating a marketing specification and working with engineering to drive development and release to market as well as managing custom or OEM product development to meet customer requirements

They will use available resources such as sales leads, literature, samples and demos, telephones, Internet and email, computers and support staff and services to produce the most effective results and exercise strong administrative, organizational and communication skills. In addition, the Product Manager will be responsible for:

  • Organizing workshops and demonstrations.
  • Monitoring daily/monthly orders and provide information in regards to account details.
  • Expansion sales channels to increase market penetration in designated product areas and markets.
  • Attaining maximum sales and appropriate product mix.
  • Uncovering new sales opportunities through cold calling, networking and other proven marketing strategies.
  • Watching for and identifying new markets.
  • Setting and achieving established sales goals.
  • Developing thorough knowledge of all frequently encountered applications and their appropriate solutions for which related products are required.
  • Reporting significant changes or trends in area sales, interpreting customer needs into new product definitions and driving development.
  • Providing feedback on product quality, needs, competition, business trends and unique product applications to management team.
  • Completing any required reports.
  • Maintaining files and records of customer names, orders and locations.
  • Developing strategic marketing plan and coordinate the sales activities in conjunction with Engineering and Operations to achieve stated goals.

Minimum Desired Qualifications:

A Bachelors degree in engineering, physics or equivalent and a minimum of 4 years experience or a graduate degree in engineering, computer science, physics or equivalent and a minimum of 2 years of applicable experience required. Also requires knowledge and experience with precision, light measurement systems. Proficient use of personal computers: Mac, Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc

Must demonstrate the ability to simplify problems, articulate solutions, lead and delegate, have excellent communication skills and be a highly motivated team oriented self-starter.  Travel required up to 30%

Must be a US citizen or permanent resident.

Preferred Skills/Experience:

Prior product and/or program management experience and certification. Experience with agile scrum and project management, versioning and related tools (i.e. MS/ Project, Jira, Asana, GitHub, etc…).
